Convert honey between grams, tablespoons, cups, and ounces. Plus tips for measuring sticky ingredients.
Honey is one of the trickiest ingredients to measure because it's dense and sticky. Here's your complete conversion guide.
Honey Conversion Table
Measurement — Grams
1 teaspoon — 7g
1 tablespoon — 21g
¼ cup — 85g
½ cup — 170g
1 cup — 340g
Why Honey is Different
Honey is 1.42× denser than water. One cup of water weighs 237g, but one cup of honey weighs 340g. This means you can't use the "grams ≈ mL" shortcut that works for water.
Tips for Measuring Honey
Spray your measuring tool with cooking oil — the honey slides right out instead of sticking
Use a kitchen scale — by far the easiest and most accurate method
Warm the honey slightly — warm honey is less viscous and pours more easily
Measure oil first — if your recipe uses both oil and honey, measure the oil in the same cup first, then the honey
Honey Substitution
If substituting honey for sugar:
Use ¾ cup honey for every 1 cup sugar
Reduce other liquid in the recipe by ¼ cup
Lower oven temperature by 25°F (honey browns faster)
Add ¼ tsp baking soda per cup of honey (to neutralize acidity)
