White Granulated Sugar: Grams to Cups
1 cup of white granulated sugar = 200 grams
One US cup of white granulated sugar weighs 200 grams. One 250 ml metric cup — the one used in the UK, Australia, New Zealand and Canada — holds 211 grams. To convert any weight, divide the grams by the figure for your cup.
Granulated white sugar weighs 200 g per cup (USDA FoodData Central); King Arthur Baking lists 198 g. Sugar crystals barely compress, so this is one of the most reliable volume-to-weight conversions in baking.
Why sugar converts so consistently
Unlike flour, granulated sugar is made of hard crystals that pour and settle to nearly the same density every time. Scooped, spooned or poured, a level cup lands within a few grams of 200 g, and the two references this site checks differ by just 2 g.
That makes sugar the ingredient where volume measuring costs you least. The exception is fine sugar: caster (superfine) sugar weighs about 190 g per cup and powdered sugar only 113–120 g, so never substitute them by the cup.
Useful sugar amounts
¾ cup is 150 g, ½ cup 100 g, ⅓ cup about 67 g and ¼ cup 50 g. One tablespoon is 12.5 g and one teaspoon about 4.2 g. A 4 lb (1.81 kg) bag holds about 9 cups.
When the sugar amount really matters
Sugar does more than sweeten: it keeps cakes moist, helps cookies spread and brown, and stabilises meringue. Cutting it by more than about a quarter changes texture as well as taste. In jam and candy the ratio of sugar to fruit or water controls whether the result sets, so weigh sugar for preserves, syrups and caramel rather than measuring by the cup.

How to measure white granulated sugar accurately
The 200 g figure assumes the spooned-and-levelled method: spoon the white granulated sugar into a dry measuring cup and sweep the top flat with a straight edge. Scooping the cup through the bag compacts it and gives a heavier cup.
- 1 US cup of white granulated sugar = 200 g
- 1 metric cup (250 ml) of white granulated sugar = 211 g
- ¾ cup = 150 g
- ½ cup = 100 g
- ⅓ cup = 67 g
- ¼ cup = 50 g
- 1 tablespoon = 12.5 g
