Grams to Cups for Water and Other Liquids
Convert grams to cups for water, milk, oil, cream and other cooking liquids, with a quick table and why liquids of different density weigh differently.
Convert grams to cups for water, milk, oil, cream and other cooking liquids, with a quick table and why liquids of different density weigh differently.
Liquid conversions are simpler than dry ingredients because liquids don't compress, but density still matters.
Water: The Simple Case
For water at room temperature:
1 cup = 237 grams (or approximately 237 mL)
100g water ≈ 0.42 cups
500g water ≈ 2.11 cups
Other Liquids
Liquid — Grams per Cup — Density
Water — 237g — 1.00 g/mL
Milk (whole) — 244g — 1.03 g/mL
Heavy Cream — 238g — 1.005 g/mL
Olive Oil — 216g — 0.915 g/mL
Vegetable Oil — 218g — 0.92 g/mL
Honey — 340g — 1.42 g/mL
Maple Syrup — 315g — 1.33 g/mL
Molasses — 337g — 1.42 g/mL
Brewed coffee is almost all water, so brewed coffee grams to cups is close to the water figure. Watery fruit is not, because the pieces leave gaps in the cup: compare watermelon grams to cups and grapes grams to cups.
Why Oil Weighs Less Than Water
Oil is less dense than water — that's why it floats. One cup of olive oil (216g) weighs about 9% less than one cup of water (237g). This matters when converting recipes.
The Simplification
For water-like liquids (milk, broth, juice), you can use the rough rule: 1 gram ≈ 1 milliliter ≈ 0.004 cups. For oils, syrups, and honey, always use ingredient-specific conversions.
Because a gram of water is a millilitre, water is easy to weigh straight into the pot or kettle: the rice to water ratio calculator gives cooking water by rice type, and the coffee ratio calculator gives brewing water for drip, pour-over or French press.
