Cream Cheese: Grams to Cups
1 cup of cream cheese = 232 grams
One US cup of cream cheese weighs 232 grams. One 250 ml metric cup — the one used in the UK, Australia, New Zealand and Canada — holds 245 grams. To convert any weight, divide the grams by the figure for your cup.
Cream cheese weighs 232 g per cup (USDA FoodData Central); King Arthur Baking lists 227 g — exactly one 8 oz block. In practice a standard US block is the easiest cup measure there is.
Blocks, tubs and whipped
A standard US block is 8 oz (227 g), which is very close to a level cup packed firmly. Tub-style spreadable cream cheese has more water and air worked in and is softer, so a cup of it weighs a little less; whipped cream cheese weighs far less — often around two-thirds as much — because it is aerated. Recipes for cheesecake almost always mean the block.
If a recipe calls for "1 cup softened cream cheese", one 8 oz block is the intended amount.
Softening and measuring it
Cold cream cheese is hard to press into a cup without air gaps, and softened cream cheese sticks to it. The simplest method is the one the packaging invites: use the foil markings or the whole block. For part-blocks, weigh it — 1 tablespoon is about 14.5 g, and ¼ cup about 58 g.
Leave it on the counter for about an hour, or cut it into cubes to soften faster. Lumpy cheesecake batter almost always comes from cream cheese that was still cold when it met the sugar.
Light (Neufchâtel-style) cream cheese measures almost the same by the cup but contains more water, so it bakes softer and can weep in cheesecakes.

How to measure cream cheese accurately
The 232 g figure assumes the spooned-and-levelled method: spoon the cream cheese into a dry measuring cup and sweep the top flat with a straight edge. Scooping the cup through the bag compacts it and gives a heavier cup.
- 1 US cup of cream cheese = 232 g
- 1 metric cup (250 ml) of cream cheese = 245 g
- ¾ cup = 174 g
- ½ cup = 116 g
