Chocolate Chips: Grams to Cups
1 cup of chocolate chips = 170 grams
One US cup of chocolate chips weighs 170 grams. One 250 ml metric cup — the one used in the UK, Australia, New Zealand and Canada — holds 180 grams. To convert any weight, divide the grams by the figure for your cup.
Semisweet chocolate chips weigh about 170 g per cup — USDA FoodData Central's figure for a cup of chips from a 6 oz package, and King Arthur Baking's too. Large chips pack more loosely than minis.
Chip size and shape
USDA measures three sizes: standard chips at 170 g per cup, mini chips at 173 g and large chips at 182 g. The differences come from how the pieces nest. Chopped bar chocolate is irregular and usually weighs about the same as chips by the cup (King Arthur: 170 g), but varies more.
A standard 12 oz (340 g) bag holds about 2 cups; a 6 oz bag about 1.
Substituting
Chips are formulated with less cocoa butter so they hold their shape in the oven. Chopped chocolate melts into puddles and streaks instead. Swap by weight, not volume, and expect a different texture rather than a different amount.
Chocolate chips by the ounce: 6 oz, 8 oz, 12 oz and more
American recipes and packages usually give chocolate chips in ounces. At 170 g per cup and 28.35 g per ounce, 6 oz of chips is 1 cup — which is why a 6 oz package is the classic one-cup bag.
2 oz (57 g) is ⅓ cup. 4 oz (113 g) is ⅔ cup. 6 oz (170 g) is 1 cup. 8 oz (227 g) is 1⅓ cups. 10 oz (283 g) is 1⅔ cups. 12 oz (340 g) is 2 cups. 16 oz, or 1 lb (454 g), is 2⅔ cups.
Metric packs work the same way: divide the grams by 170. A 370 g bag is about 2.2 cups (2 cups plus 3 tablespoons), and one tablespoon of standard chips weighs about 10.6 g.
How many chips per batch
A typical batch of drop cookies made with 2¼ cups (about 280 g) of flour uses one 12 oz (340 g) bag of chips — 2 cups. Scaling a recipe up or down is easiest by weight: about 150 g of chips per 125 g cup of flour keeps the same ratio. Toss chips in a spoonful of the recipe's flour before folding them into a thin batter so they do not sink.

How to measure chocolate chips accurately
The 170 g figure assumes the spooned-and-levelled method: spoon the chocolate chips into a dry measuring cup and sweep the top flat with a straight edge. Scooping the cup through the bag compacts it and gives a heavier cup.

- ¾ cup = 128 g
