Cheddar (shredded): Grams to Cups
1 cup of cheddar (shredded) = 113 grams
One US cup of cheddar (shredded) weighs 113 grams. One 250 ml metric cup — the one used in the UK, Australia, New Zealand and Canada — holds 119 grams. To convert any weight, divide the grams by the figure for your cup.
Shredded cheddar weighs 113 g per cup — USDA FoodData Central and King Arthur Baking agree. That is the 4 oz = 1 cup rule for grated semi-hard cheese. Diced cheddar is heavier at about 132 g.
The 4 oz = 1 cup rule
Both references this site checks give 113 g for a cup of shredded cheddar — 4 oz — and King Arthur Baking applies the same figure to grated jack, mozzarella and Swiss. It holds for cheese shredded on the large holes of a box grater and for bagged pre-shredded cheese, and it is why an 8 oz block or bag is sold as "2 cups shredded".
The rule breaks in two directions. Cheese grated on the fine holes or a rasp is fluffy and a loosely filled cup can weigh well under 113 g; packed down, shredded cheese weighs more. Recipes almost always mean loosely filled, not packed, unless they say otherwise.
Common amounts
At 113 g per cup: 50 g of shredded cheddar is about ½ cup (0.44), 100 g is about 0.88 cups, 150 g is about 1⅓ cups, 200 g is about 1¾ cups and 250 g is about 2.2 cups. Diced cheddar is denser, about 132 g per cup (USDA), so 100 g diced is about ¾ cup.
Hard cheeses are different. Finely grated Parmesan weighs about 100 g per cup on this site, and a fluffy rasp-grated Parmesan much less, so do not use the cheddar figure for it.

How to measure cheddar (shredded) accurately
The 113 g figure assumes the spooned-and-levelled method: spoon the cheddar (shredded) into a dry measuring cup and sweep the top flat with a straight edge. Scooping the cup through the bag compacts it and gives a heavier cup.
- 1 US cup of cheddar (shredded) = 113 g
- 1 metric cup (250 ml) of cheddar (shredded) = 119 g
- ¾ cup = 85 g
- ½ cup = 57 g
- ⅓ cup = 38 g
- ¼ cup = 28 g
- 1 tablespoon = 7.1 g
